Tapering cylindrical form on a spreading base, the lower part applied with foliate scroll and strapwork on a textured background.
The upper rim is chased and relief decorated with acorn and oak leaf ornaments.
The spout with male mask, the hinged cover with scrolled thumbpiece.
Stylized handle with acanthus leaves ornaments and anthemion motif top.
Fully hallmarked (twice) for London, England, dated 1891, maker’s mark for the renowned silversmiths Robert Roskell, Allan Roskell and John Mortimer Hunt.
The base is marked – “Hunt & Roskell late Storr & Mortimer 284”.
A nearly identical silver gilt example with Royal Arms was sold at Christie’s, London, December 2005, lot 362.
